On May 1, 1991 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California, M.L.B. history was made. In the bottom of the 4th inning of an Oakland Athletics home win versus the New York Yankees (7-4), Rickey “Man of Steal” Henderson stole his 939th base, shattering Lou Brock’s long-standing all-time Major League Baseball career stolen base record and reaching baseball immortality. Considered one of the greatest lead-off hitters and baserunners in M.L.B. history, the speedy Henderson was always one of my favorite Oakland A’s players, along with the “Bash Brothers” (A’s outfielder Jose Canseco and A’s first baseman Mark McGwire).

Although Henderson was renowned for his base stealing and athletic prowess, he was also an above average power/contact hitter throughout his 25-season M.L.B. career. Providing rare power hitting production at the top of the lineup (lead-off hitter), Henderson frequently produced 25+ home run, 50+ R.B.I. season, 100+ run, 100+ hit M.L.B. regular season statistics along with astronomically high on-base percentages.

#1. Which baseball player led the American League in strikeouts during the 1991 Major League Baseball season?

Finish

I can remember, like it was yesterday, when Henderson was deservedly awarded the 1989 American League Championship Series M.V.P. trophy (versus the Toronto Blue Jays) thanks to the following sparkling series stat line: batting .400, scoring eight runs, smashing two home runs, eight stolen bases in five games, five runs batted in (R.B.I.), seven walks and a 1.000 percent slugging percentage. Henderson also contributed tremendously to the Oakland A’s 1989 World Series (dubbed the “Earthquake Series”) Championship sweep (4-0) of the San Francisco Giants, batting .474 for the series, stealing three bases, blasting one home run and collecting three runs batted in (R.B.I.). Henderson also holds the single-season Major League record for stolen bases (130 in 1982) and is the only player in American League history to steal 100 bases in a season (not once, but three times). Henderson played for nine teams from 1979 to 2003, including four stints with his original team, the Oakland Athletics.

Throughout his career, Henderson was always among the Major League stolen base leaders (part of the elite 40 stolen base club), with the exception of a few injury-plagued seasons. Henderson ended his career with 1406 stolen bases: a colossal 468 more than Lou Brock, who is a distant second on the all-time stolen bases list with 938. As a seasoned baseball fan, I tip my hat to Rickey Henderson for his extraordinary accomplishments during his professional baseball career and he will always be looked upon by me with the utmost respect and reverence for his contributions to professional baseball.
