1) Sam Bowie: It’s unfortunate that Sam Bowie had to leave behind a brief, bittersweet N.B.A. legacy, realizing only a small fraction of his maximum potential. Although the highly-touted Bowie had an exemplary University of Kentucky college basketball career, college basketball success doesn’t necessarily equate into N.B.A. success. Bowie has the unenviable distinction of being one of two players selected before Michael Jordan in the 1984 N.B.A. Draft; the other pick being Hall of Fame former Houston Rockets center Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon.

Needless to say, Sam Bowie goes down as one of the biggest N.B.A. draft busts in N.B.A. history. Bowie’s mediocre ten-season N.B.A. career was riddled with nagging injuries, which severely limited his mobility and offensive production. At a towering 7’1″, 235 lbs, Bowie’s legs and foot injuries were compounded at times by weight problems; his leg injuries served to be the proverbial “achilles heel” of his career.

#1. Which other future N.B.A. center played in the 1979 McDonald's All American Game® alongside Sam Bowie?

Finish

He managed to accumulate a 10.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game N.B.A. career average, converting 30.2% of his three-point career shot attempts. Bowie played for the Portland Trailblazers, New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Lakers, respectively, retiring from professional basketball with the Lakers after the 1994-1995 N.B.A. season. Among his basketball achievements is an N.B.A. All-Rookie First Team selection in 1985 and a consensus second-team All-American selection in 1981 with the Kentucky Wildcats. Bowie’s career is a dubious example of what could have been, had the planets been aligned.

2) Derrick “D.C.” Coleman: Since his N.C.A.A. college basketball days with the Syracuse Orangemen, I had always held Derrick Coleman’s game in high regard and had anticipated a bright future awaiting him in the N.B.A. Upon leaving the Syracuse Orangemen, Coleman had initially been touted by various basketball analysts as potentially becoming the best power forward in N.B.A. history. Yes, that’s right. Even better than “Sir” Charles Barkley, Karl “The Mailman” Malone or Tim “Fundamentals” Duncan, for example.

Equally as effective in the low and high posts, Coleman could play with his back to the basket or face up his opponent and score with ease. Fearless and powerful in the paint with 3-point shooting range, “DC” would cause opposing team’s mismatch problems on any given night. His 6’10”, 230 lb frame was reminiscent of “Round Mound of Rebound”, Charles Barkley; except Coleman had a 5-6 inch height advantage on Barkley. Coleman was the first pick overall of the 1990 N.B.A. Draft by the New Jersey Nets, eventually becoming a 1/3 of the formidable early-nineties Net’s trio: Coleman, the late former Net’s high-scoring, All-Star shooting guard Drazen Petrovic and former Net’s All-Star southpaw point guard, Kenny Anderson. His N.B.A./N.C.A.A. college career awards and achievements include an N.B.A. All-Star team selection (1994), N.B.A. Rookie of the Year (1991) and Big East Player of the Year (1990). His N.B.A. career totals include a respectable 16.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game career average, spanning 15 N.B.A. seasons. At various times throughout his N.B.A. career, Coleman received criticism about his sporadic weight problems and his attitude/work ethic was often called into question. Although Coleman eventually retired from the N.B.A. with solid N.B.A. career statistics, Coleman would unfortunately never be able to become a Hall of Fame-caliber player, as many from informed basketball circles had anticipated.

3) Juwan Howard: Once an invaluable component of Michigan’s infamous “Fab Five” Men’s college basketball team, Juwan Howard seemed destined for N.B.A. superstardom when he formally declared to enter the 1994 N.B.A. Draft. He was the 5th pick overall of the 1994 N.B.A. Draft by the Washington Bullets, drafted slightly after standout Duke University small forward, Grant Hill and high-scoring Purdue Boilermaker small forward Glen “Big Dog” Robinson. Howard’s qualities included his tenacious defense, on-the-floor leadership and soft touch, especially from long range. At 6’9″, 250 lbs, Howard tended to be a bit overweight and notoriously slow-footed at the power forward position. His N.B.A./College basketball career awards and achievements include an N.B.A. All-Star selection (1996), All-N.B.A. Third Team selection (1996) and two-time N.B.A. champion (2012-2013) with the Miami Heat. He turned out to be a bonafide N.B.A. journeyman, playing for eight teams throughout his nineteen-season career. His career tallies include a decent 13.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game career average. Although Howard had a lengthy N.B.A. career, he was unfortunately unable to translate his collegiate success at Michigan into an equally (or more) successful N.B.A. basketball career.
