Does an N.F.L. (National Football League) team record exist that is more unenviable than the Buffalo Bills four consecutive Super Bowl losses record? Every opponent the Buffalo Bills have faced in the Super Bowl have defeated the Bills decisively, with the exception of their first opponent the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV (a nail-biting 20-19 loss). If former Bills placekicker Scott Norwood had converted that last-second field goal (vs the New York Giants) instead of kicking it wide, the Bills fortunes may have changed for the better.

The first Super Bowl loss was especially surprising, considering that the Bills were a superior team overall, the pre-game favorite and that the New York Giants were hobbled by injuries at the time. Not to mention that the Bills had scored a combined 95 points in their two previous playoff games with former Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly running the “No-Huddle” offense to perfection. Incidentally, the Bills had defeated the Giants 17–13 in Week 15 of the 1990 N.F.L. regular season at Giants stadium (the game in which former Giants Hall of Fame quarterback Phil Simms got injured).

#1. What college did the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XXVII starting quarterback Troy Aikman attend?
The Bills second consecutive Super Bowl loss against the Joe Gibbs-coached Washington Redskins at Super Bowl XXVI, was perhaps less surprising considering that the Redskins were a defensive juggernaut at the time and the consensus pre-game favorite. The Washington Redskins proved far too powerful for the Buffalo Bills, eventually resulting in a 37-24 Redskins victory. The third Super Bowl loss was an equally lopsided affair; this time the Jimmy Johnson-coached Dallas Cowboys vanquishing the Buffalo Bills, 52-17. The former backup Buffalo Bills quarterback Frank Reich had just pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in N.F.L. history, defeating the former Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon-led Houston Oilers 41-38, in the A.F.C. wild-card game.
Nevertheless, the Cowboys defense proved too much for the Bills, forcing a Super Bowl record nine turnovers—four interceptions and five lost fumbles. With their Super Bowl XXVII loss, Buffalo became the first team in N.F.L. history to lose three consecutive Super Bowls. Thirty-five of the Cowboys’ points came off of turnovers, including three first-half touchdowns. The fourth Super Bowl loss versus the Cowboys was another blowout, 30-13. Once again, the Dallas Cowboys were the pre-Super Bowl favorites, with former Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith rushing for 132 yards on 30 carries and 2 touchdowns, scoring 24 unanswered points in the second half, and winning the Super Bowl M.V.P. (Most Valuable Award) in the process.
The Bills had created an unprecedented N.F.L. dynasty; a Buffalo Bills dynasty infamous for losses instead of wins. The Super Bowl loss record was previously held by the Miami Dolphins; the Dolphins lost three consecutive Super Bowls during the Larry Csonka era between 1971-1973. I felt especially sorry for Buffalo Bills Hall-of-Famer’s quarterback Jim Kelly, running back Thurman Thomas, wide receiver Andre Reed and defensive end Bruce Smith who were undeservedly denied a Super Bowl ring four times during their respective illustrious careers. A fitting acronym for the Bills unprecedented misfortune could be ‘Boy, I Love Losing Super Bowls’. If former Bills Hall of Fame head coach Marv Levy had another go at it, I am sure he would have planned things differently. I guess Marv Levy will never know how it feels to have Gatorade spilled on him (no pun intended).
