Super Bowl XLII was played on February 3, 2008 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Super Bowl XLII pitted the Eli Manning-led N.F.C. (National Football Conference) champions New York Giants vs the Tom Brady-led A.F.C. (American Football Conference) champions New England Patriots. Ironically, Super Bowl XLII is considered one of the biggest upsets in the history of professional sports as well as one of the best Super Bowls in N.F.L. history. The 2007 New York Giants became the 9th wild card team in N.F.L. history to reach the Super Bowl.

Additionally, the 2007 Giants also became the 5th N.F.L. wild card team to win the Super Bowl, and the first N.F.C. wild card team to accomplish the feat. The 2007 Giants also were the third team in N.F.L. history to win three road playoff games en route to a Super Bowl and set a league record for most consecutive road wins in a single season. Historically speaking, the 1990 Bill Parcells-coached New York Giants upset the favored Marv Levy-coached Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, 20-19. Super Bowl XLII was also a rematch of the final game of the 2007 N.F.L. regular season, in which the heavily-favored New England Patriots won, 38–35.

#1. What college did the New York Giants Super Bowl XLII starting quarterback Eli Manning attend?
The A.F.C. champion New England Patriots were on the heels of completing a perfect regular season (16-0); the only N.F.L. team to accomplish said feat since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, and the only one since the league expanded to a 16-game regular season schedule in 1978. The 2007 New England Patriots also set the regular season team points scored record, amassing 589 points (shattering the previous record by 33 points). The New York Giants, on the other hand, who finished the regular season with a 10–6 record, were seeking to become the first N.F.C. wild card team to win a Super Bowl. After a scoreless third quarter, the fourth quarter saw a Super Bowl record three lead changes, including New England wide receiver Randy Moss making a 6-yard touchdown reception with 2:42 left to play before New York’s game-winning drive.
The game is best remembered for the Giants’ fourth-quarter game-winning drive. Losing 14–10, New York got the ball on their own 17-yard line with 2:39 left and managed to advance 83 yards down the field swiftly. In the drive’s most spectacular play, New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree made the “Helmet Catch”, a leaping one-handed catch pinning the football with his right hand to his helmet for a 32-yard gain. I sat stunned when I witnessed New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning hurl a downfield bomb to a surrounded David Tyree and actually complete the pass; my first hunch was either a Patriot interception or Giant incomplete pass. New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress then scored the winning touchdown on a 13-yard reception with 35 seconds remaining. The final score line was Giants-17 Patriots-14. Another interesting Super Bowl fact was that this game was the first since Super Bowl IX (Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 16-6) that neither team scored at least 20 points. It also featured a plethora of current and future N.F.L. Hall of Famers, i.e, Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss, Patriots linebacker Junior Seau, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Giants defensive end Michael Strahan. Incidentally, it was also the Giants Michael Strahan’s last game of his exemplary N.F.L. career. Giants quarterback Eli Manning was named Super Bowl M.V.P.; completing 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
