World Cup U.S.A. 1994 champions squad, five-time world champions Brazil were the consensus pre-tournament favorites.

#1. Which soccer player won the F.I.F.A. World Cup Golden Boot Award at F.I.F.A. World Cup France 1998?
As for France, they won their three group matches and defeated Paraguay in the knockout stages on golden goals. They had a penalty-shootout with soccer powerhouse Italy in the quarter-finals, and defeated Davor Suker-led Croatia to reach the final. The finals match was preceded by various last-minute dramatic developments, affecting the performances of both teams. The young, superstar Brazilian striker Ronaldo, had suffered a convulsive fit on the eve of the match, raising speculation about the potential effects of his condition on his on-pitch performance. After initially being left out of the team sheet and notwithstanding his suboptimal physical state, it was announced just 72 minutes before kick-off that he was indeed going to play.
On the other hand, Le Bleu was lead by midfield maestro Zinedine “El Mago” Zidane, lanky striker Thierry “Titou” Henry, hard-working defensive midfielder Didier Deschamps, speedy, left back Bixente Lizarazu among other standout French players. Renowned for his on-the-ball technique, vision and ball control, Zidane was named the F.I.F.A. World Player of the Year award three times during his professional playing career: 1998, 2000 and 2003. The magical, superstar French attacking midfielder Zidane also won the 1998 Ballon d’Or. He was Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 1996, Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2001 and La Liga Best Foreign Player in 2002.
In 2004, he was named in the F.I.F.A. 100, a list of the world’s greatest living players compiled by Brazilian soccer legend Pelรฉ. Zidane received an uncharacteristic red card in the second (group) match against Saudi Arabia for a stamp on Fuad Anwar, becoming the first French player to receive a red card in a World Cup Final. Once France eventually reached the final, they dominated Brazil from the kick-off. Zidane seemingly had the ball glued to his boots, mesmerizing the Brazilian defenders at every turn. Zidane scored two similar goals, both headers from corner kicks taken by midfielder/defender Emmanuel Petit and forward Youri Djorkaeff, respectively. Petit added a third goal deep in stoppage time to seal the 3โ0 win for France.
Zidane became an instant national hero, and over one million people celebrated the victory on the Champs-รlysรฉes (in Paris, France) where a huge image of Zidane was projected on the Arc de Triomphe along with the words “Merci Zizou”. Admittedly, I was among those who gave France a slim-to-none chance (pre-World Cup prediction) of defeating mighty Brazil in the World Cup. Thanks to Zinedine “El Mago” Zidane’s clutch goals and inspirational performance against formidable Brazil in the final, France was able to win their first ever World Cup title.
