During the 1994 N.F.L. regular season, 49ers lefty quarterback Steve Young lead the N.F.L. in passing with an astronomical passer rating of 112.8; breaking former 49ers legendary N.F.L Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana’s record for the highest regular season passer rating in N.F.L. history. Young completed a super-efficient 324 out of 461 pass attempts (70% completion rate) for 3,969 yards, 35 touchdowns, and a miniscule 10 interceptions. He rushed 58 times for 293 yards and rushed for seven rushing touchdowns, winning the 1994 N.F.L. regular season Most Valuable Player Award.
Results
#1. What year did former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young get drafted to the N.F.L.?
Young also led the 49ers to an N.F.L.-best 505 total points scored and the N.F.L.’s best record with a 13–3 regular season record. Steve Young was also awarded the 1994 N.F.L. Super Bowl M.V.P trophy with the following sparkling game stat line: 24/36 passes completed (67% completion rate), 325 passing yards, six touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 134.8 passer rating. The 49ers N.F.L. Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice had a career-high 112 receptions for 1,499 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns during the 1994 N.F.L. regular season campaign. Rice’s 1994 N.F.L. Super Bowl receiving stats were as follows: 10 receptions, 149 yards and three touchdowns, respectively.
Rice was the target of Young 13 times; a little over one third of Young’s 36 pass attempts. With all due respect to the legend Steve Young, Rice was equally deserving of the 1994 N.F.L. Super Bowl M.V.P. Award (possibly as co-M.V.P.) due to his stellar performance. The following N.F.L. Super Bowl player records were set by Jerry Rice: most points scored (career) – 42, most touchdowns (career) – seven, most receiving yards (career) – 512, most receptions (career) – 28, most receiving touchdowns (career) – seven and most yards gained (career) – 527.
The following N.F.L. Super Bowl records were tied by Jerry Rice: most points scored (game) – 18, most receiving touchdowns (game) – three. The following N.F.L. Super Bowl player records were set by Steve Young: most touchdown passes (game) – six and most passing attempts without an interception (game) – 36. Young and Rice, respectively, were undoubtedly critical components of 49ers head coach George Seifert’s efficient short-pass, West Coast offense. The 1994 49ers star-studded roster included the likes of N.F.L. Hall of Fame cornerback Deion “Neon” Sanders, N.F.L. Pro-Bowl tight end Brent Jones, N.F.L. Pro-Bowl running back Ricky Watters, N.F.L. Pro-Bowl free safety Merton Hanks, N.F.L. Pro-Bowl right linebacker Ken Norton Jr. (son of former W.B.C. heavyweight boxing champion Ken Norton Sr.), etc.
The San Diego Chargers, on the other hand, were considered overachievers throughout the 1994 N.F.L. regular season, 1994 N.F.L. playoffs and 1994 N.F.L. Super Bowl. 1994 N.F.L. pre-season predictions had the San Diego Chargers finishing low in the standings primarily because they added so many new players via the N.F.L. draft and free agency: 10 out of 22 of their new players became starters. Another reason for their dismal N.F.L. pre-season forecast was because they were competing against stronger American Football Conference opponents i,e. Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, etc. throughout the 1994 N.F.L. regular season.
Despite the odds being stacked against them, the Chargers ended up winning their first six N.F.L. regular season games and finishing with an 11–5 N.F.L. regular season record, the A.F.C. West championship, and the #2 A.F.C. playoff seed. Their strong N.F.L. regular season results could be attributed to the performances of Chargers N.F.L. Pro-Bowlers: quarterback Stan Humphries, running back Natrone Means and right linebacker Junior Seau, respectively. Their surprisingly strong N.F.L. regular season results, however, were simply not enough to stop the 49ers offensive juggernaut at N.F.L. Super Bowl XXIX. In my humble opinion, the 1994 San Francisco 49ers are one the greatest teams in N.F.L. history.
